  WHAT HAPPENED?

  Montpellier were leading the game in question 4-2 when proceedings were brought to an abrupt halt. Match officials were left with little choice but to suspended the game after seeing Diaw cross paths with a missile launched towards the field by those in the crowd.

• THE BIGGER PICTURE

  The firecracker in question was already on the pitch as Diaw sought to retrieve the ball and get the game back underway. It then exploded as he made his way to the edge of the six-yard box, leading to the Senegal international crumpling to the turf.

  Diaw was taken off on a stretcher after being attended to by Clermont medical staff. It was at that point that the decision was taken to suspend proceedings, with players from both terms sent back to the dressing rooms.
